The way you log in to Library resources has changed. You will continue to have access to content included in the Library's subscription, but some providers may not recognise some personal settings or saved content.

Will I still be able to access IEEE Xplore?

Yes. Your access to IEEE Xplore is provided through the Library's subscription when you sign in using your University of Sunderland credentials.

Your personal profile may temporarily lose its connection to the Library’s paid subscriptions, meaning you may see a paywall when you try to download full-text PDFs until you re-authenticate. When you re-authenticate, an institutional ID token logs in to your personal IEEE Xplore profile and links you to our subscriptions.

Why are my personal IEEE details separate from my University login?

IEEE Xplore treats personal accounts as an independent layer that sits on top of your institutional authentication.

Will I lose my personalised content, such as saved searches or alerts?

This cannot be confirmed, so we recommend backing up your saved content now using the steps below.

What should I do to save my personalised content?

We are temporarily offering the option to log in via both the 'New Library Authentication Service' and the 'Old Library Authentication Service'.

Screenshot of log in options

You should be able to access your saved content by choosing the 'Old Library Authentication Service' option and using your University user ID and password.

If you are not seeing the above options, your browser cookies will have stored the last login method you used. You will need to sign out completely, clear your browser cache and cookies, then close and reopen your browser. Start again from Databases A-Z where possible, rather than from a saved bookmark or link. You can also use an incognito or private browser window to access the databases using the old authentication service, if you would prefer not to clear cache and cookies.

1. If you set up a personal IEEE Xplore account, sign in now and check which email or username you use.
2. If you have forgotten your password, reset it to access your saved content.
3. Make a note or screenshot of anything you wish to keep or reproduce. These may include email alerts, alert preferences, saved items, or saved searches.

What should I do next?

1. Log out of IEEE and clear your browser cache and cookies.
2. Access IEEE through Databases A-Z. Log in using the 'New Library Authentication Service'. Your username will be userID@student.sunderland.ac.uk (for students) or userID@sunderland.ac.uk (for staff).
3. You should see a banner stating "Access provided by: University of Sunderland".
4. Click Personal Sign In at the top right and enter your username and password; this will pair your personal account with the new session.
5. If your saved content is missing, you can recreate it from your backup.

We hope the instructions above are helpful, but please note that we cannot guarantee they will work in every case. They have been prepared to the best of our knowledge, using the information available to us. You should back up, save, or export any personal content wherever possible, in case it needs to be recreated.
