Acer laptops use the Function keys as device keys by default. For example, if you press the F1 it will put the laptop to sleep rather than executing the F1 command. To use the Function key commands, you need to use the Fn key in conjunction with the F keys.
If you find the touchpad on your laptop does not work, it is likely that someone has pressed the F7 key which turns the touchpad on and off. Pressing F7 should turn it back on again.
